Introductory Seminar
Zen Buddhism is a 2,500 year old tradition,
which when properly understood and practiced, makes it possible
for us to clarify our minds that we may live with equanimity
and compassion in our everyday lives for the benefit of all
beings.
By way of introducing interested people to Zen
Buddhism, the Zen Center of Denver offers an introductory 1 1/2
day seminar of lectures and instruction in the theory and practice
of Zen. The introductory seminar is led by Karin Kempe Sensei; Ken Morgareidge Sensei; or Peggy Sheehan Sensei
(spiritual directors of the Zen Center of Denver) and by qualified
senior members of the Center. The material presented and discussed
in the seminars is specifically designed for persons 17 years
of age and older. After completing an introductory seminar, one
is welcome to take part in nearly all Zen Center events and is
eligible for membership.
The first day of the seminar includes lectures
on the theory and practice of Zen Buddhism and the full scope
of Zen training available at the Center, as well as instruction
in and practice of sitting and walking meditation. There are also
several question and answer periods. A light vegetarian lunch
and snack are provided. The Seminar runs from 9:00 AM until approximately
5:00 PM. Please arrive between 8:30 and 9:00 AM and wear loose
fitting, comfortable clothing. Please do not wear shorts or short
skirts.
The second day of the seminar includes attendance
at a teisho (Zen talk) given in the meditation hall by a Zen teacher with
the Zen Center of Denver sangha (community) and is followed with
refreshments for those who might wish to exchange with members
of the Center. The second day's activities are from 8:00 AM to
approximately 10:30 AM. Please arrive between 7:30 and 7:45 and
wear loose fitting, comfortable clothing of subdued color.
The upcoming seminar dates are:
May 5 & 6, 2012
September 15 & 16, 2012
It is highly recommended that those who plan
on attending the seminar read Taking the Path of Zen
by Robert Aitken, and The Three Pillars of Zen by Philip
Kapleau in preparation for the seminar. These books clearly reflect
the style of Zen training carried on at the Center. If time is
a factor and you can only read one book, Taking the Path of
Zen is suggested.
If you would like to
attend an introductory seminar, please fill out the seminar registration
form and mail it to us along with the fee at least one week in
advance, if possible.
