Zen Talks

Zen talks are open to the general public on selected Sundays. They are preceded by two rounds of zazen and a short chanting service. One can attend the full Sunday program, or just come for the chanting and talk. See the section on Zazen(linktozazen) if you will be sitting at the Center for the first time. There are three kinds of Zen talks:

  • Teisho: talks given by Danan Henry Roshi or another fully sanctioned Zen teacher are called teisho, which is a Japanese word meaning "presentation of the shout." More than a simple lecture or discourse, it is a direct presentation of Zen Buddhist teachings.
  • Dharma Talk: Dharma talks are given by senior students that are beginning to take a more prominent role as leaders in the Sangha.
  • Senior Talk: These are talks given by senior students that have begun to show genuine insight and maturity in practice. They are only open to associate and supporting members of the Center, and zazen instruction is not offered on Sundays when senior talks are scheduled.
If you wish to attend, please observe the following guidelines:
  1. Zazen begins at 8 am. Instruction for newcomers is given during the first round. See the section on Zazen(linkto: zazen) for information. The doors are locked at 7:55, so please arrive before then. No instruction is provided when the talk is part of a zazenkai, so if you have not sat at the temple before please come to another Sunday or to an evening sitting.
  2. Talks begin promptly at 9:00 am. Please arrive between 8:40 and 8:55 if you are only coming for the talk. Someone will meet you at the southwest door (on 31st Ave.) for orientation. No one will be admitted after 9:00. The talks conclude at approximately 10:00-10:30.
  3. Please be aware that you are entering a temple where a meditation session is in progress. Please refrain from loud or unnecessary speech. There is no smoking in the temple or on its grounds.
  4. Usually, there are refreshments and a time for socializing after the talks. You are welcome to join us if you wish.
  5. Please make a donation of your own choosing. A donation box is located in the foyer.

Please see the calendar for dates of upcoming talks.
