Two outstanding Zen Masters of modern Japan, Daiun Sogaku Harada (1870-1961) and Hakuun Ryoko Yasutani (1885-1973) established a new school of Zen Buddhism that combined the strongest features of both the Soto and Rinzai sects. This integral school of Zen was brought to the United States, Canada, Mexico, South America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand by Philip Kapleau (Rochester Zen Center) and Robert Aitken (Honolulu Diamond Sangha), two outstanding American students of Harada Roshi and Yasutani Roshi. Danan Henry Roshi is a Dharma heir of Philip Kapleau Roshi and completed 10 years of Zen training with Robert Aitken Roshi, to become a sanctioned Diamond Sangha Dharma Master. All three dharma heirs of Danan Roshi received full transmission and jointly assumed the spiritual directorship of the Zen Center of Denver in the Ascending the Mountain Ceremony on September 12, 2010.

The Zen Center of Denver is a Diamond Sangha practice community in the lay Zen tradition of Robert Aitken Roshi.
