Every-Minute Zen (Mindfulness Practice)
The ancients used to say, "One lives in forgetfulness, one dies in a dream."
Awareness of being [mindfulness] is the secret whereby one sheds light on one's existence,
develops the power of concentration, and finally brings wisdom to fruition.
-Thich Nhat Hanh
This life and this practice are not two separate things; we practice the way we live and we
live the way we practice.
-John Daido Loori Roshi
Every-Minute Zen is a systematic approach to mindfulness practice in one's daily life away from
the Temple. It is based upon efforts adapted for contemporary lay life from The Sutra on the
Four Foundations of Mindfulness by the Buddha, the Paramitas, the Precepts, and various Buddhist
doctrines.
Any member may request (in dokusan) to receive ongoing guidance in mindfulness
practice. However, such instruction and guidance are only for those who are working sincerely
to establish, or have established, a regular sitting practice in their daily lives and who
are willing to make a commitment to long-term consistent work in this systematic mindfulness
practice.
